The 3.0L V6 TDI Clean Diesel engine was available in Europe last year, but Canada is only now getting its allocation (about 200 to start with, starting June 1) and even these are late arriving, having originally been scheduled for January. Better fuel mileage — diesels are typically 20 to 30 per cent more efficient — potentially lower maintenance, and reliability have been traditional diesel benefits. Diesel engines of the past, however, had low performance, some issues with cold weather fuel and starting, a loud clattery sound, and ejected a noisome odour, not to mention sooty lumps, from their tailpipes.
Their potential popularity also suffered from the snooty attitude that held (a small coterie of Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen owners aside) that diesels were just for big rigs and trucker wannabes. |
